June 5, 2024 in the garden

The bulbous black bumblebee lumbers towards the beckoning zucchini flower whose outstretched petals welcome him. Does he know or care how much we rely on him?

Are we the only selfish species and everything else performs their cosmic role with perfect selflessness?

I watch the dull gray titmouse make endless trips to and from my bird feeder selecting only the right safflower seed for its new baby. It will only choose the fat safflower out of the six different seeds available to it.  How does it know?

Why do we believe we are the only intelligent species?

The lanky garden spider waits patiently in the center of its carefully crafted web for the next unwary victim.

We all have our role to play in the unfolding miracle happening before our very eyes.  All we can do is play our part to the best of our abilities.
