Fundamental Delusions

There are two fundamental delusions we suffer from that prevent us from being a witness to creation and experiencing the awe and joy that go along with that knowledge.

One, the ego thinks it is separate from reality; that you are detached from the rest of nature. But the indisputable fact is that you are part of this thing we call reality. You cannot be separated from it. The forces that operate on nature also operate on us. It is true we are a separate sensory organ of the universe but we are not separate from the universe.

Two, we think there is a past, present and future but that is an illusion in the mind. The past and the future have utility to us as physical beings with needs and wants, but they only exist in our imagination. The only reality is now, the present.

All of our anxiety and suffering are due to these two delusions.

Instead of realizing we are all connected to the same reality, our ego convinces us that we are either inferior or superior to other egos. This gives rise to hate and resentment. However, when you can acknowledge we are all part of the same whole, you will be able to feel love and compassion towards yourself and others.

We worry about the things we did wrong in the past or are anxious about the things that may or may not happen in the future. By spending all of our time thinking about the past and the future we waste precious time and energy better spent improving our condition. It doesn’t mean we can’t learn from our past mistakes or take time to plan for our future. But when you realize only the present exists, you can calm the chattering mind.

Once you realize the truth, you can truly experience the joy and awe of being a witness to creation.
