Nobody Knows Anything

I don’t watch much TV but I watch a lot of videos on YouTube.  There’s a lot of junk out there and the algorithm sucks because it thinks it knows what I want to watch so it gives me a lot of stuff on topics I have looked at previously.  But the truth is I want to learn new stuff, too.

So, a recent video caught my attention.  It was titled Nobody Knows Anything and the channel is called ‘The Overexamined Life’, if you want to look it up.  Basically it’s some young guy asking ‘WHY’ about life and why can’t he just goof off.  I found the video interesting but he really didn’t take the ‘why’ far enough.

If he was a Witness to Creation, he wouldn’t need to ask why.  He would know.  I mean, in a way he is right, we have been brainwashed to accept a certain view of reality.  We are expected to act in a certain way.  As adults we don’t ask ‘why’ as much.  We did when we were children but eventually the ‘why’ was drained out of us as we became indoctrinated by our culture.

Why can’t we just goof off in life?  Well, the short answer is you can; if you’re willing to accept the consequences of your actions.  Nobody owes you anything just because you want to goof off.

The truth is what we think we know is all made up by those who came before us.  It’s a long chain of made up answers to the ‘why’ we asked growing up.  In the beginning, a lot of it was superstition; just guesses as to why the world worked the way we perceived it.  As we observed more we discovered the universe operated based on rules, what we call ‘science’.  Even as we’ve progressed, a lot of what we think we know is just educated guesswork.

So, if nobody knows anything, does that mean there is no truth?  I believe there is truth, but not much, really.

  • I know I am here at this point in time and space.
  • I am aware of this.
  • I know that this shell requires sustenance and shelter if it wants to thrive.
  • I know I am here with billions of other points of consciousness that have the same requirements.
  • That’s about it.

Based on these facts, lots of explanations arise.  But they are just people guessing and asking why.  Why am I here?  What’s the best way to get the resources I need?  What’s the most efficient way to organize the billions of us so as not to self-destruct? How can I live a life of joy and happiness?

Why can’t I just goof off?

That’s our history.  We’re still trying to figure it out.
