When we observe reality we notice certain patterns. We, as humans, have been noticing this since we could think. For example, we noticed the sun and the moon moved in regular cycles. We attached meaning to these. Out of these observations over time, we developed the scientific method. Change one variable and see what happens.
From this, we also came up with ‘rules’ which seem to explain the world around us. When we couldn’t explain things, we came up with the idea of ‘god’. That solved all our problems. Now, when something didn’t fit the rules, it was a ‘miracle’!
Of course we never considered the possibility that we just didn’t understand the rules. We still see this kind of thinking today. There’s only one problem:
THE UNIVERSE IS PERFECT
It couldn’t be any other way. Whether you believe in a creator or not. So, if you believe in god, anything you don’t understand, you call a ‘miracle’. There are so many reasons why this is wrong. If your god is perfect then you admit she created an imperfect system. That it was all done for our benefit because, of course, we are the center of the universe. What hubris!
Religions have been built on this false assumption. But what you don’t realize is that if you really believe in a perfect god, then any notion that the universe can’t be anything but perfect is blasphemy. No, it wasn’t a miracle that the seas parted. No, it wasn’t a miracle that a man came back from the dead.
So, here’s the bottom line. The universe operates on rules. If we don’t understand them, it doesn’t mean anything more than our knowledge is limited. But the rules don’t change.
