Can You Fathom The Universe?

Let’s try a little thought experiment and see if we can calm the chattering mind, engage the observing mind and put things in perspective.

Currently, where is your body?  It’s right here on earth, of course.  OK, now imagine you are standing on the moon.  The moon is around 250,000 miles from the earth.  Humans have been there.  It’s not hard to imagine.

Now, imagine you travel towards the sun.  We see it every day.  It’s around 92 million miles from the earth.  Its light takes about 8 minutes to reach us.  OK, we feel it’s within our reach.

Now, let’s consider the closest star to our sun.  You’ve probably heard of Alpha Centauri. It’s around four light years from us.  That’s around 25 trillion miles! That’s probably getting hard to fathom and we’ve hardly gone anywhere.

Scientists estimate our galaxy is around 100,000 light years in diameter.  Our incredible brains have created the tools that give us a pretty good estimate.  That’s just our galaxy!  It is already incomprehensible.  And scientists estimate our galaxy has 100 billion stars!  This is truly mind boggling.  I’m not sure we can fathom it.

Now, here’s what’s truly incomprehensible; scientists estimate there are from 200 billion to 2 trillion GALAXIES in our universe!  Could anyone really believe we are the only intelligent life in the universe?  Not with those numbers.  It is truly incomprehensible no matter how hard we try.

And yet, here you are, this point of consciousness in a miraculous organic machine on this speck of cosmic dust getting to experience the miracle of creation happening right before your very eyes!

Think about this the next time someone or some thing upsets you.
